NOTA Peperiksaa 1
• Technology - Definition
• The systemic and systematic application of behaviour and physical sciences concepts and other knowledge to the solution of problems. (Gentry, 1995).
• Key Terms
– “Systemic application” - all things have an impact upon and are affected by other things in their environment.
• Technology - Definition
– “Systematic application” is included because it is easy to pass over or leave uncontrolled many significant variables in a complex system such as learning.
– “Application” is the translation and implementation of scientific and other knowledge into a system of strategies and techniques designed to solve a problem.
– Technology - Characteristics
• Technology is value free; its use or misuse depends on the values of those who employ it.
• The application of technological solutions to one problem may create other problems which may be more serious than the original problem.
• Technology - Characteristics
• Applications of technology should be selected and/or continued only after determination that desirable consequences outweigh undesirable consequences.
• Fear and hesitancy about using advanced technologies is largely a fear of unknown consequences.
• To be supportive of appropriate technologies, individuals need to progress through the stages of awareness, interest, trial, appraisal before their acceptance or adoption will take place. (Rogers & Shoemaker, 1971).
• Instructional Technology - Definition
• The systemic and systematic application of strategies derived from behaviour and physical sciences concepts and other knowledge to the solution of instructional problems.
• Several points to consider in this definition are:
– Instructional technology may be divided into more narrow technologies. For example, there are message design, message delivery, and evaluation of message effect as subsets of instructional technology.
• Instructional Technology - Definition
• Instructional technology can be viewed as a subset of a larger technology, that is, educational technology.
• Many of the strategies and techniques of one technology may also be relevant for other technologies.
• The selection of technology depends on both purpose and values. Some strategies and techniques are superior to others and should be chosen on that basis.
• Educational Technology - Definition
• The combination of instructional, developmental, managerial, and other technologies as applied to the solution of educational problems.
• Several points to consider in this definition are:
– The referent for both instructional and educational technology remains the root concept “technology.” There is need to provide one other referent, that of “education.”
• Educational Technology - Definition
• John Dewey (1916) defined education as “the enterprise of supplying the conditions which ensure growth, or adequacy of life, irrespective of age".
• Smith (1965) differentiate between education and training:
– Training
• When the intended outcome is the inculcation of skills, habits, attitudes, or beliefs
– Education
• When the intended outcome is to increase the student’s ability and inclination to employ critical, independent, and creative judgement
• Educational Technology - Definition
• Good (1959) defines instruction (under teaching) as “the act of providing activities, materials, and guidance that facilitates learning, in either formal or informal situations”
• Information & Communication Technology
(ICT)
Near the end of the 1980s, the term ‘computers’ was replaced by ‘IT’ (information technology) signifying a shift of focus from
computing technology to the capacity to store and retrieve information.
This was followed by the introduction of the term ‘ICT’ (information and communication
technology) around 1992,
when e-mail started to become available to the general Public
Pelgrum and Law (2003)
• Information & Communication Technology
• ICT is an acronym that stands for Information Communications Technology
• However, apart from explaining an acronym, there is not a universally accepted definition of ICT?
• * Why?
• Because the concepts, methods and applications involved in ICT are constantly evolving on an almost daily basis. Its difficult to keep up with the changes - they happen so fast.
• - INFORMATION
- COMMUNICATIONS
- TECHNOLOGY
• A good way to think about ICT is to consider all the uses of digital technology that already exist to help individuals, businesses and organisations use information.
• ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in a *digital form.
• For example, personal computers, digital television, email, robots.
• So ICT is concerned with the storage, retrieval, manipulation, transmission or receipt of digital data. Importantly, it is also concerned with the way these different uses can work with each other
• Definition of ICT
• ICT Application & Use
• Standard Office Applications
• Word processing
• E.g. Microsoft Word:
• Write letters, reports etc. mail merge
• Spreadsheets
• E.g. Microsoft Excel;
• Analyse financial information; calculations;
• create forecasting models etc
• Database software
• E.g. Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Access;
• Managing data in many forms, from basic lists
• (e.g. customer contacts through to complex material (e.g. catalogue)
• Presentation software
• E.g. Microsoft PowerPoint;
• make presentations, either directly using a computer screen or data projector. Publish in digital format via email or over the Internet
• Desktop publishing
• E.g. Adobe Indesign, Quark Express, Microsoft Publisher;
• produce newsletters, magazines and other complex documents.
• Graphics software
• E.g. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; Macromedia Freehand and Fireworks;
• create and edit images such as logos, drawings or pictures for use in DTP, web sites or other publications
• Local Area Network (LAN)
• Internal networks
• Usually referred to as a local area network (LAN), this involves linking a number of hardware items (input and output devices plus computer processing) together within an office or building.
• The aim of a LAN is to be able to share hardware facilities such as printers or scanners, software applications and data. This type of network is invaluable in the office environment where colleagues need to have access to common data or programmes
• Wide Area Network (WAN)
• External networks
• Often you need to communicate with someone outside your internal network, in this case you will need to be part of a The Internet is the ultimate WAN - it is a vast network of networks.
